How To Fit A T-Bar Threshold

13/08/2025

Everyone knows that the finishing touches make all the difference. When it comes to doorways and moving from one floor surface to another, T-Bar door thresholds deliver numerous benefits. Whether you’re replacing old door dividers or installing new flooring, knowing how to fit a T-Bar threshold can make the entire process easier, quicker, and leave you with a professional finish.

This guide covers the importance of T-Bar thresholds, how to fit them, and the various options available to match your flooring material and interior design.

What is a T-Bar Threshold?

A T-Bar threshold is a floor divider that sits on the floor between your doorframe and under your door. Its profile takes the shape of a ‘T’, giving it its name. Available in a range of materials and sizes, T-Bar thresholds help provide a smooth transition from one floor type to another.

Also known as floor dividing strips, threshold ramps, or transition strips, they can be installed onto carpet, wood, laminate, or tiles to cover gaps, hide imperfections or height differences between flooring, and create a flawless finish.

How To Install A T-Bar Threshold

Whether you’re working with carpet, wood, laminate or tiles, the process for installing a T-Bar threshold is very similar:

  1. Remove the existing threshold

If you’re replacing a floor divider, the first step is to remove the old or damaged threshold. Floor dividers are usually nailed, screwed or glued into place. Use a hammer or pry bar to remove nails, and a screwdriver to remove screws. You can then use a pry bar or utility knife to lift and remove the threshold.

  1. Choose the right T-Bar threshold

Use a tape measure to measure the length of the doorway, the width of the gap and the depth between the door and the floor. This will help you get the correct-sized threshold. You can also decide on the type of material, colour and finish you prefer for your project.

  1. Cut your T-Bar threshold to size

If you’re lucky enough to have a threshold that fits perfectly, you can skip this step. However, if you do need to trim your threshold, use a square to ensure a straight, right-angled cut, and a circular saw for a clean edge. The Proxxon KGS 80 Chop & Mitre Saw is also ideal for cutting aluminium and stainless steel tile trim. Another option includes using a mitre box, such as the Genesis Pro Mitre Box, and a junior hacksaw, like the Bahco 239 Junior Hacksaw.

  1. Test your threshold

Now’s the time to check your T-Bar threshold fits under your door. Place it in the doorway, between the two types of flooring, to check it fits correctly. Next, open and close the door to make sure it sits flush without anything catching.

  1. Fit your T-Bar threshold

One of the reasons T-Bar door thresholds are so popular is due to their easy installation and compatibility with multiple floor surfaces. Apply a threshold adhesive, like the C-Tec PGB Power Grab ‘n’ Bond Construction Adhesive, underneath the top strip (the top of the ‘T’), as this is the part that will be in contact with and secure to the floor. The vertical part of the ‘T’ should slide down between the two floor materials. Place the T-Bar in position and press down. Leaving a heavy object on top of the threshold for a few hours while the glue sets.

Top Tip: If you’re working with carpet and laminate, choose a specific carpet to laminate threshold.

Why You Need a T-Bar Threshold

T-Bar door thresholds are crucial for connecting two different types of flooring where doorways meet. They also:

  • Improve Safety: T-Bar strips not only cover gaps between different floorings, but they also help to edge and secure your flooring in place. This reduces the chances of flooring lifting and causing potential trip hazards.

  • Increase Floor Durability: Doorways naturally receive high levels of foot traffic. T-Bar door strips can prevent your flooring from shifting and protect it from general wear and tear, prolonging the appearance and condition of your flooring.

  • Fix Imperfections: When using various types of flooring, you may encounter differences in height and threshold gaps. We offer a range of threshold sizes, including 14mm, 20mm, 25mm, and 26mm, to accommodate these imperfections as well as prevent any under-door drafts.

  • Elevate Overall Aesthetics: Door T-Bar thresholds provide a functional and stylish finish for your flooring projects. With a range of materials and colours, such as anthracite, brass, copper, gold or silver, you can select the right T-Bar threshold to suit your style, budget and requirements.
